In 1959, the Soviet Luna 3 probe photographed the Moon's far side using film salvaged from downed American spy balloons. The probe developed the film onboard, scanned negatives with a photocell, and radioed 17 grainy frames to Earth. The images revealed a hemisphere covered in bright highlands with almost no dark maria.
