Apple will remove support for encrypted Mac OS Extended (HFS+) volumes starting with macOS 28. Unencrypted HFS+ drives remain supported. Users must decrypt or reformat affected drives before upgrading. macOS 26 will begin notifying users of incompatible encrypted disks. Apple recommends backing up data before taking action.
