Space elevator breakthrough nears with graphene tether

The International Space Elevator Consortium will announce polycrystalline graphene as its top tether candidate, a material 100 times stronger than steel. A 62,000-mile elevator could deliver 30,000 metric tons yearly, with trips to Mars cut to 61-120 days.
