Factory labor shortage is structural, not fixable by hiring

A February 2026 Lightcast report found labor scarcity is structural, not cyclical. An Advanced Manufacturing survey showed 69% of manufacturers are investing in robots, up 9% from the prior year. Deloitte projects a global shortfall of 1.9 million workers by 2033. Germany alone will lose seven million workers by 2035.
