Linux developer Qingfang Deng proposes removing the BSD-Compress compression support from the Linux PPP networking code today due to a fatal error on 64-bit systems. The decoder assumes a 32-bit accumulator width but declares it as unsigned long, causing corruption. This core routine has remained unchanged since Linux 2.1.67 (1997) and 1.3.33 (1995).
