Ex-MeitY Cyber-Law Head Defends Takedown Rules

Rakesh Maheshwari, former MeitY cyber-law head, said Section 79(3)(b) takedown notices were knowingly open to misuse, so the 2025 and 2026 amendments limited who may issue them to senior designated officers. He spoke after Instagram withheld cartoonist Satish Acharya's account under the same provision. Platforms, not MeitY, must tell users about takedowns, but often do not.
