Dutch admiral Jacob Roggeveen landed on Rapa Nui in 1722 and saw moai statues but no timber or cranes, concluding the islanders could not have built them. Modern research by Carl Lipo and Terry Hunt tested oral tradition and found 18 people walked a 4.35-tonne replica 100 metres using ropes, confirming the walking method.
