Anthropic researchers identified J-space, an internal activation subspace in Claude that functions as a digital equivalent to the human brain's global workspace. J-space satisfies five cognitive properties of conscious access: verbal report, directed modulation, internal reasoning, flexible generalization, and selectivity. Suppressing J-space severely degrades Claude's complex reasoning.
