PlanetScale backs up sharded Postgres databases by spinning up one EC2 instance per shard, restoring prior S3 snapshots, and replaying WAL in parallel. The approach sustains over 50 GB/s, backing up petabyte-scale databases in hours. A 32 TB database on 8 shards backs up in about 2.8 hours.
