Mushroom hunting with LLMs: what can go wrong?

A benchmark tested 16 LLMs on 1,040 mushroom photos from the FungiTastic dataset. Google Gemini 3.6 Flash led with 64% first-guess accuracy. Deadly species were frequently misidentified: a deadly webcap was called a chanterelle, and death caps were mistaken for edible grisettes.
