Data pipelines break because producers change schemas without notice. Data contracts are formal, machine-readable agreements specifying schema, semantics, SLAs, and ownership. A contract violation becomes a build failure, not a production incident. The tooling is mature, but the hard part is convincing upstream teams they have downstream responsibilities.
