Modal Motors, a US startup founded by Michael Van Steenburg, is developing electric motors that avoid rare earth magnets entirely, aiming to cut China out of the supply chain. The company has two products in development: a small drone motor and the flat Hybrid Enigma Drive. It will compete in TechCrunch Disrupt's Startup Battlefield 200 next month.
