Scientists found evidence that ultrathin ruthenium dioxide films display altermagnetism under lattice strain, unlike its nonmagnetic bulk form. Rice University's Ming Yi, Bharat Jalan of the University of Minnesota, and Milan Radovic of the Paul Scherrer Institute reported the findings in Science Advances, using spin-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.
