India Halts OpenAI, Anthropic AI Deployments

India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has asked central ministries to pause deploying OpenAI and Anthropic AI models for cybersecurity, citing dual-use risks and reliance on foreign-controlled technology. The finance ministry proposed using GPT-5.5 for cybersecurity, but the department rejected the proposal. The government has committed ₹10,372 crore to the IndiaAI Mission for domestic AI development.
