Researchers at University of Massachusetts Amherst revived expired Visa contactless cards for unauthorized payments via NFC proxy attacks. The attack exploits missing cryptographic binding of expiration dates in Visa's kernel. Mastercard, American Express, and Discover resisted the attack. Visa was notified in May 2025.
