Windows Device ID Tied Hacker to Jewelry Heist

Microsoft provided the FBI with a Global Device Identifier (GDID) from Peter Stokes's Windows installation, linking the 19-year-old alleged Scattered Spider member to a May 2025 intrusion at a luxury jewelry retailer. The GDID, which persists across updates, matched the device that created an ngrok account used in the attack. Stokes faces federal charges in Chicago for conspiracy, computer intrusion, and fraud.
