AI token costs surge as usage explodes

AI usage is growing so fast that businesses are paying more than ever through tokens, the data units large language models read and produce. One company reportedly spent US$500 million in one month on Claude licences from Anthropic. Some firms are withholding raises or finding human employees cheaper than deploying AI.
