The Credential Problem Behind Agentic AI

Hugging Face disclosed a July breach driven end-to-end by an autonomous AI agent that harvested cloud and cluster credentials. GitGuardian counted 28.65 million new hardcoded secrets in public GitHub commits in 2025, up 34 percent year over year. Claude Code-assisted commits showed a 3.2 percent secret-leak rate versus a 1.5 percent baseline.
