Anthropic settles authors lawsuit for $1.5 billion

A federal judge approved Anthropic's $1.5 billion settlement with authors who accused the company of training its Claude models on pirated books from LibGen and Pirate Library Mirror. The payout covers roughly 500,000 works at about $3,000 per book. Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín trimmed attorneys' fees by roughly $86 million. The settlement resolves the Bartz v. Anthropic class action.
