Postgres deadlocks occur when transactions hold locks each other needs, blocking both. The default deadlock_timeout of one second means transactions wait before detection. Frequent deadlocks overwhelm databases, especially when applications retry queries immediately, recreating the cycle. Consistent lock ordering, shorter transactions, and retry logic with backoff and jitter prevent issues. PlanetScale's Traffic Control can block problematic queries.
