Ray Tomlinson sent the first network email in 1971, choosing the @ sign. V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai wrote a program called EMAIL as a teenager in 1978 and later received a copyright. A federal judge dismissed Ayyadurai's defamation suit against Techdirt, ruling the term "email" too ambiguous to settle the dispute.
