Google launches its free SynthID detector globally in English from Wednesday, allowing users to verify images and videos from partners including OpenAI, Nvidia, Kakao, and Apple. The tool detects invisible watermarks embedded during generation to distinguish algorithmic content from human-made visuals, though Apple support arrives soon. Google watermarked over 180 billion images and 240,000 years of audio since 2023.
