Microsoft used 'Lego' tool to optimize Windows binaries

Microsoft used an internal tool called Basic Block Tool (BBT), nicknamed Microsoft Lego, to shuffle binary code for faster execution. Former engineer Dave Plummer explained that BBT defragmented related code so the loader touched fewer memory pages. This optimization was critical for Windows and Office on constrained hardware.
