Canada bans "sophisticated deepfakes" of political figures

Bill C-25 received royal assent, amending the Canada Elections Act to ban AI-generated deepfakes of political figures. The law makes it illegal to create or distribute imitations of candidates, party leaders, or the chief electoral officer with intent to mislead. Parody and satire are exempted.
