University of Utah scientists found that the TROPOMI satellite instrument, designed for air pollution tracking, can detect fading solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence in Western US conifer forests roughly two years before bark-beetle mortality appears in aerial surveys. The study, published in Remote Sensing of Environment, shows this physiological signal responds earlier and more sensitively than conventional greenness indices like NDVI.
