Thermodynamics math rewritten after 200 years

Researchers are rebuilding thermodynamics using gauge theory from quantum field theory. Bryan Roberts at the London School of Economics presented the work on June 16 at the Foundations of Physics conference in Irvine, California. The approach defines temperature and entropy as geometric projections, making them easier to apply to systems from engines to black holes.
