Tonga Eruption Tsunami Cause Revealed

Scientists led by Marta Ribó at Auckland University of Technology used rare sonar maps to show the 2022 Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha'apai eruption launched a 131-foot tsunami by blasting the volcano's caldera roof into one block, which collapsed and displaced 2.1 cubic miles of seafloor. The study, published in Nature Geoscience, urges mapping of 74 submarine volcanoes along the Tonga-Kermadec Arc.
