NHTSA Orders Tesla to Prove Cybercab Legality

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a formal Special Order to Tesla on September 10, demanding the company prove under oath how its steering-wheel-less Cybercab complies with federal safety standards. Tesla has until September 30 to respond, with penalties for non-compliance reaching up to $139 million. The order follows the start of commercial Cybercab service in Austin on September 3.
