A guide details building a minimal ZFS NAS using Linux, Samba, and Samsung 990 Pro NVMe drives without Synology, QNAP, or TrueNAS. ZFS stores all configuration on the disks themselves, so moving drives to a new machine with zfs import recovers the pool. The setup uses RAIDZ1 with ashift=12 for 4KB sector performance.
