A Nature paper models short-sea shipping electrification and finds 30% of maritime energy use and 20% of emissions are technically electrifiable by 2030. Under central assumptions, 90% of that fleet is economically viable. The study covers inland vessels, ferries, coastal ships, and port craft, not deep-sea container ships. The model includes vessel types, fuel assumptions, battery specs, and port constraints.
