Java's original JVM maintainer Tim Lindholm rewrote the entire threading package three days before the 1995 SunWorld convention because the runtime was crashing. The threading model was fundamentally broken due to system interrupts issued while the SPARC processor executed an instruction. The rewrite worked, and Sun CEO Scott McNealy demonstrated Java on stage.
