A new NBER working paper finds the Affordable Care Act (ACA) reduced mortality, but not through its Medicaid expansions. The study, by Anuj Gangopadhyaya, Cuiping Schiman, and Robert Kaestner, used a novel empirical approach to isolate the effects. It found no evidence Medicaid expansions had a beneficial effect on mortality, but the ACA net of Medicaid expansion did reduce mortality.
