Microsoft unveils Majorana 2 quantum chip with lead and indium arsenide materials

Microsoft has unveiled Majorana 2, a quantum computing chip designed to enhance qubit stability by replacing aluminum with lead and updating the semiconductor active region to indium arsenide and indium arsenide antimonide. Chetan Nayak, technical fellow, stated the material changes improve the topological phase, shielding qubits from cosmic disturbances. This upgrade enables significant performance increases, advancing Microsoft's timeline for a practical quantum computer to 2029. The chip's improved materials reduce qubit instability, a key barrier in quantum computing. Microsoft's Discovery agentic AI was used in the design process, emphasizing integration of AI in hardware development.
