NASA's Curiosity rover discovered pure sulfur crystals at Gale Crater in 2024 by crushing rocks. Researchers now propose an asteroid impact melted buried sulfur, which flowed downhill and hardened. The hypothesis is supported by a damaged crater 1,280 feet wide uphill from the deposits.
