Man jailed for AI music bot fraud

Michael Smith of Cornelius, North Carolina, received an 18-month prison sentence for using over 1,000 bots to fraudulently generate $8,091,843.64 in royalties from his AI music between 2017 and 2024. He pleaded guilty in March 2026 to conspiring to commit wire fraud and must forfeit all illicit earnings while facing two years of supervised release.
