Worst breaches of 2026 so far

Cybersecurity has become central to major stories in 2026, with attacks growing bolder and harder to contain. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) allegedly uploaded a live copy of the Social Security database to an unsecured third-party server. The database contained Social Security numbers and personal information of most living Americans. The Social Security Administration does not know for sure what was on the server.
