China approved the mandatory national standard GB 44721-2026 for L3 and L4 autonomous driving systems, effective July 1, 2027. The standard requires systems to be at least as safe as a competent, attentive driver and mandates driver-readiness monitoring for L3. It applies to M- and N-category vehicles, excluding automated parking.
