Focused Energy raises whopping $240M Series A for laser-powered fusion tech

Focused Energy secured a $240 million Series A round, bringing its total private funding to $300 million. The company has also received $200 million in grants, making it one of the most funded fusion startups. It is developing a laser-driven inertial confinement reactor, inspired by the National Ignition Facility's successful fusion experiment, which achieved net energy gain. The design uses lasers to compress fusion fuel, creating conditions for atomic fusion and energy release. Debbie Callahan, a key NIF fuel target designer, joined as chief strategy in December, strengthening the technology's scientific foundation.
