Researchers led by Hirohiko Fukagawa published a study on Oct. 7, 2026, in Advanced Materials detailing a thermodynamic boundary for organic solar cells. The team tested five donor materials against 15 acceptors with electron affinities between 2.0 and 3.1 eV. They found that when the donor's optical energy gap approaches the energy of separated charges, photocurrent generation stops.
