Ransomware attacks up 20% in 2026

Ransomware incidents rose 20% year over year in the first half of 2026, with 5,275 recorded attacks. The second quarter saw 2,581 incidents, driven by rival ransomware-as-a-service groups Qilin and The Gentlemen. Education faced 4,816 weekly attacks in June, up 16%, remaining the most targeted sector.
