Plastic webcam covers can damage a MacBook's display and do not meaningfully improve privacy. Apple redesigned the camera module in late 2008 so the sensor and green LED share the same physical circuit, making it impossible for malware to activate the camera without the indicator. Apple warns against closing a MacBook with anything thicker than 0.1 mm between the display and chassis.
