Raspberry Pi Locks RAM Upgrades on Pi 5

Raspberry Pi firmware has refused RAM capacity changes on Pi 5-family boards since at least September 2024, confirmed by engineer Phil Elwell in June 2026. The intentional lock prevents bootleggers from reselling 2GB boards with untested larger chips as 8GB models. Same-part repairs still work, but an older bootloader bypasses the check at the cost of future security updates.
