Modern CPUs feature 64-bit registers, larger address spaces, and more registers than 1980s 8-bit chips. Vector instructions (SIMD) and virtualization support are key additions. Paging, virtual memory, pipelining, and floating point were introduced to x86 after the early 80s. 64-bit mode also provides consistent floating point results by avoiding x87 80-bit precision.
