Maui Wildfire Toxic Metal Exposure Persists

A study in PNAS found 1,400 Maui adults had elevated urine levels of antimony, manganese, barium, and arsenic six to 18 months after the August 2023 wildfires, which destroyed over 2,200 structures and killed more than 100 people in Lahaina. Higher metal burdens were linked to abnormal lung function, suggesting exposure continued during recovery from ash and dust.
