New laws in England and Wales, effective this week, allow pubs, off-licences, nightclubs, and restaurants to use biometric scanning technology for age verification. Customers can download software to scan their face on their own phone, generating a QR code to prove they are over 18. Traditional plastic IDs remain valid.
