Apple's cancelled self-driving car program, which cost ten billion dollars over ten years, is now driving AI performance in the upcoming M7 and M8 processors. The Neural Engine, born from car research and debuting in the iPhone X's A11 Bionic, laid the groundwork. Tim Cook called autonomous systems "the mother of all AI projects" in 2017.
