India's DPDP Act, 2023, gives data fiduciaries two grounds to process personal data: consent or legitimate uses, while the EU's GDPR recognizes six. IAMAI asked the government in August 2025 to allow unconditional use of public data for AI training. The Act's full penalty regime takes effect May 2027.
