Microsoft created the mini Surface dev box that Qualcomm couldn't

Microsoft unveiled the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box at Microsoft Build 2026 designed for developers to run large AI models locally without cloud costs. It features Nvidia's Blackwell-architecture RTX Spark processor and 128 gigabytes of unified memory delivering one petaflop of AI compute. The device uses Nvidia's Arm-based RTX Spark chips like the Surface Laptop Ultra and has a 100-watt thermal envelope exceeding the 45 to 80 watt range of RTX Spark laptops. Its aluminum chassis resembles the top of an Xbox Series X console and acts as a heatsink. This move challenges the per-token pricing model that has dominated AI since ChatGPT's launch.
