Sony released the CDP-101, the world's first CD audio player, in Japan on October 1, 1982, priced at JPY 168,000. A planned worldwide launch with Philips was delayed because Philips' CD100 was not ready, so the initial release was limited to Japan. US and European sales began in March 1983.
