Perplexity moved its core search serving tier off Amazon DynamoDB to CobbleDB, an in-house Rust key-value store, after usage-based pricing and hidden internals caused tail-latency spikes at over 200,000 requests per second. Median batch-read latency fell from 31.4 to 5.60 milliseconds, storage costs dropped at least 20 percent, and the company plans to open-source the codebase.
